Grass allergies in dogs is a condition that is caused by pollen in the air. The condition can cause skin and respiratory problems.

Generally, the condition is worse during the spring and fall months. Although some dogs unfortunately suffer from the condition all year.

Symptoms of Grass Allergies in Dogs

The condition produces a range of symptoms. For example, some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Itching
  • Scratching
  • Rash
  • Diarrhea
  • Sneezing
  • Bald spots
  • Hives
  • Skin redness
  • Snoring

Causes of Grass Allergies in Dogs

The cause of the condition is pollen. Usually, the condition is caused by a dog breathing pollen or licking fur that has pollen on it.

Unfortunately, the following breeds of dog seem most likely to develop the condition:

  • German Shepherds
  • Bulldogs
  • Pugs
  • Terriers (various types)
  • Miniature Schnauzers

Additionally, the condition is mostly found in dogs who are older than three months.

Treatments for Grass Allergies in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Be sure to mention any seasonal changes in symptoms.

Secondly, your vet will carry out a detailed examination of your dog’s skin and fur.

Thirdly, a serum allergy test can be used to confirm the condition. This test is carried out by taking a blood sample.

Generally, treatment for the condition will focus on managing the symptoms. For example, special shampoos can used. Additionally, hydrocortisone sprays can help.

In some cases, medication is appropriate. Antihistamine and corticosteroid medication can be used. As always, if your vet prescribes your dog any medicine, make sure to stick to the correct dose and frequency instructions. Also, complete the full course of medicine.

In general, it’s best practice to keep your dog away from grass and plants that aggravate their allergies.
