Talk about the runt of the litter: Beyonce, a Chihuahua–Dachshund mix puppy born in Sacramento, CA, could earn the Guinness World Record as the smallest dog in the world.
Beyonce, named after the world-famous celebrity, weighs 4 ounces and is expected to grow to 1.5 pounds. She came from a litter of five puppies but was almost never born. Beyonce’s mother, Casey, was pregnant and abandoned and, at one point, slated to be euthanized by animal control. Mama was eventually saved by The Grace Foundation.
But the puppy escaped death yet again. On March 8, Beyonce was born without vital signs. The veterinarian had to get her heart beating, and a member of the shelter staff used mouth-to-mouth techniques to resuscitate the newborn.
The bottle-fed pup is expected to live a normal life. Beyonce can only claim the Guinness title for the smallest dog in the world when they’re fully grown. The current Smallest Dog in the World, a Yorkshire Terrier named Lucy, weighs 2.5 pounds.
