An English Springer Spaniel who got buried beneath massive rocks on a San Francisco beach is now safe at home thanks to a jogger that discovered the pup and alerted rescuers.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

SF Animal Care and Control posted about the harrowing rescue on Instagram last week. The 1-year-old pup, named Gwen, got trapped under big rocks on Ocean Beach near a sewage treatment plant.

“Someone was jogging on the beach and thought he heard a muffled bark, turned around but no one, human or dog, was in sight. He decided to look around in the rocks, and he miraculously spotted a dog’s face looking up from under the rocks,” the post recalled.

The jogger called SF Animal Care and Control. Officer Ortega responded, and after locating the pooch, moved the rocks and pulled the fur baby to safety. Gwen was “scared and cold, but otherwise OK,” according to the post.

After Gwen’s rescue, officers found out that Gwen’s family was looking for her and had called ACC to report her missing. Officer Ortega went the extra mile and drove Gwen to her Noe Valley home, where she was reunited with her family.

“We have no idea how she got into that tiny area. Possibly, she dislodged a large rock, fell in, and the rock rolled on top,” the Instagram post read. “However it happened, we’re so glad she’s now safe and sound at home!”

SF Animal Care and Control spokesperson Deb Campbell told People in a statement that the organization is “incredibly proud of our Animal Control officers and the things they do to rescue animals. We’re happy Officer Ortega was there for Gwen when she needed help.”
