Will Smith Shares Tear-Jerking Tribute to I Am Legend Dog Abbey

Will Smith shared a touching Instagram tribute to his canine I Am Legend co-star, Abbey, on National Pet Day. The actor posted a video captioned “the goodness girl,” featuring behind-the-scenes footage of him with his dog pal as they filmed the 2007 sci-fi blockbuster.

Abbey played the dog Samantha in I Am Legend, with another German Shepherd, Kona, also filling in for some scenes. Despite it being well over a decade since Smith shared a screen with her, his recent post on Instagram confirms that he hasn’t forgotten about his four-legged co-star.

The Instagram tribute features footage from I Am Legend along with behind-the-scenes clips of Will Smith and Abbey playing between takes. It also shows the two attending the movie’s premiere.

Abbey became a star following her appearance as Samantha, as her bond with Smith in the movie quickly won viewers’ hearts. German Shepherds are known for their unwavering loyalty, which translated to Samantha’s role in the movie, staying by Smith’s side as his character navigates the post-apocalyptic New York City.

Where is the I Am Legend dog now?

I Am Legend’s official social media account confirmed that Abbey was still alive and well back in 2022, with her celebrating her 16th birthday. No further updates have been provided since then.

Smith’s social media post caused many to panic and fear that Abbey had passed away, though the actor made no comment on where the dog is currently residing.

As German Shepherds have an average lifespan of up 9–13 years old, Abbey has certainly led a long life, though her acting days are likely well behind her. This means that she probably won’t be making a reappearance in the upcoming I Am Legend 2, which will see Smith return to the role of Dr. Robert Neville. The sequel will also star Michael B. Jordan in an unnamed role.
