Retired Explosive Detection Dog up for Adoption in Pennsylvania

In May, 28 dogs were rescued from the K-9 Hero Haven after being reported to be living in unsafe conditions. Among the canines was Caesar, a retired explosive detection dog. He is now looking for a loving, forever home where he can spend his golden years in comfort with people who will give him the care he deserves.

Unfortunately, after giving the country their best for years, several retired K-9s found themselves in a mismanaged rescue that failed to provide them with the love and care they deserved. K-9 Hero Haven is a rescue for working dogs where they can stay until they find new homes. However, according to a Facebook post, the canines faced neglect due to the non-profit organization’s mismanagement and were made to live in filth.

Among the 28 dogs rescued was German Shepherd Caesar. He is six years old and a retired explosive detection dog. When Pennsylvania SPCA found him, his beautiful coat was matted, and he lived in a small kennel. However, even after suffering months of neglect, his rescuers noted that his eyes remained sharp and shone through the cage he was living in.

After being rescued, the German Shepherd started showing his personality again. He has enough space to run around and play with the staff as much as he wants. Caesar’s favorite activity is chasing tennis balls, but the staff members are trying to introduce him to some new activities. Frisbees are a new toy he enjoys playing with when he is not chasing behind tennis balls.

Pennsylvania SPCA behavior team member Renee Brooks told The Dodo that they occasionally work with the retired K-9 to teach him to relax. While he is wary of strangers, he enjoys being petted once he is comfortable around someone. With summer here, Caesar has also been enjoying relaxing in the pool.

The retired explosive detection dog will need a forever home with some experience handling working dogs. Moreover, Caesar’s future parents must give him enough time to keep him engaged physically and mentally.
