A new children’s book is touching hearts and getting kids excited about the world of animal rescue.
Released in hardcover this week, Mimi and Maty to the Rescue! tells the story of dynamic animal rescue duo Mimi and Maty, a girl and her three-legged dog who work together plotting clues in their handy dandy rescue notebook in an effort to find Roger, a lost rat.
Mimi is a tenacious little girl with dreams of saving every pet she can, and author Brooke Smith hopes that the character will inspire other children to get involved in pet rescue at a young age.
With vibrant artwork by world-renowned illustrator Alli Arnold, Mimi and Maty to the Rescue! brings to life the fun and rewarding world of animal advocacy.
The real-life Mimi is Smith’s daughter Mimi Auland, founder of the animal rescue websites Freekibble.com and Freekibblekat.com, which provides meals to shelter dogs and cats in need when visitors answer trivia questions. Mimi was only 11-years-old when she came up with the idea for the Freekibble site, and thanks to her efforts, over 8 million meals have been provided to shelter pets and pet food banks across the nation.
Maty, an Australian Shepherd, is the current canine ambassador for the Humane Society of Central Oregon. She lost her leg 10 years ago when a nasty staph infection led to a necessary amputation.
But just because she’s handicapped doesn’t mean that Maty spends her life sitting on the sidelines. When she is not attending community events and visiting local schools to spread her message of humane education, Maty loves catching Frisbees; in fact, Maty is the first three-legged dog in history to both qualify and compete in the Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Dog Championship. Maty, a legitimate Superdog, has also been known to comfort hospice patients and tame feral kittens in her spare time.
