In a recent interview with People, Dr. Deirdre Barrett, Clinical and Evolutionary Psychologist at Harvard Medical School, answered some questions on the topic of animal dreams. It turns out that many mammals have similar sleeps cycles to humans, meaning they do likely have dreams. But Dr. Barrett’s answer to the question of what dogs experience when they dream has the internet in tears.
Humans dream about the same things they’re interested in by day, though more visually and less logically. There’s no reason to think animals are any different. Since dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, it’s likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell and of pleasing or annoying you.
The internet reacted to the news that their pups were dreaming of the human owners they love as you might expect. The heartwarming idea that our dogs are so attached to us that they see us even in their sleep elicited reactions like this:

And this:
ever since I read that thing about dogs dreaming about us I want to cry whenever sage is dreaming

And we couldn’t agree more with this:
“its likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell and of pleasing or annoying you.” WE DONT DESERVE DOGS WHSGDHF IM
