Natural foods are so much better for your dogs that processed treats from big brand companies. Plus they cost less which is always a bonus. Sweet potatoes are full of nutrients for dogs.
Sweet potatoes are a complex carbohydrate, a natural energy source and full of vitamins and minerals. A lot of times markets miss label sweet potatoes as yams.
Sweet potatoes are a great food to give your dog. They are high in fiber, low in fat and full of vitams like B6, C and manganese.
Some dogs will gobble them up raw or you can bake them if you like. It’s a fun way to make a treat you can share with your dogs. Here’s what I like to do.
Step 1: Chop up a sweet potato (skin, scars and all).
Step 2. Spray with olive oil. Sometimes I also drizzle with cod liver oil or hemp oil for added nutrients.
Step 3: Heat the oven to 400 degrees.
Step 4: Bake them for about an hour, or until golden brown.
Step 5: Eat them up. They are crunchy, chewy, sweet and delicious. You can store them in a plastic bag or food storage container in the fridge.
Don’t salt them. Salt is yummy for us humans but not so good for your pups.
Also, start small. Don’t give your dog a lot of sweet potato if they aren’t use to it. A sudden increase in fiber could cause issues. One treat a day is plenty for any dog.
That’s about it. It’s super easy and I bake up a week’s worth of treats for a fraction of the cost of a processed dog treat. Each week you can do a different vegetable. I also do this with carrots for my pups.
