Can Dogs Eat Chicory Greens? Are Chicory Greens Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat chicory greens? You may be asking this because you want to give your dog a crunchy snack, or maybe your pup ate a bite of your greens, and you want to know if you should be worried. Humans can eat chicory greens, so are they also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is yes, chicory greens are safe for dogs to eat. They can technically come in several forms, but the type of chicory greens we are talking about here is the curly endive, or frisée.

You have probably seen or eaten frisée in a fancy salad. It has a bitter flavor and is often paired with a sweeter dressing; this bitter flavor may be tasty for you but off-putting for your pup.

That said, as with all human food, you must consult your veterinarian before giving your dog any new foods or ingredients. Here’s what you should know about feeding chicory greens to your dog.

How Are Chicory Greens Good For Dogs?

Chicory greens are chock full of vitamins and minerals. If your pup can get past the bitter taste, they are a great snack option for your furry friend.

These greens are high in vitamins A, C, and E, all of which are imperative to your dog’s health. Vitamins A and E are essential in cell growth and function, and vitamin C boosts your pup’s immune system.

Chicory greens are also a great source of potassium and magnesium, both minerals that are fantastic for your pet’s health. Overall, this is a good, leafy green to feed your best friend.

Dogs can eat chicory greens raw or cooked. If they like the bitter flavor, eating the leaves raw is ideal because they retain their full nutritional value.

As with all fruits and veggies that you can feed your pup, thoroughly washing chicory greens before giving them to your dog is important. Fresh chicory greens may harbor dirt and bugs that can make your pup sick.

If you choose to cook your dog’s chicory greens, sautéing is the best option. Make sure to leave them free of oils and spices, as these can upset your dog’s tummy.

It’s worth noting that chicory greens are not the same as chicory root. Chicory root is also safe for your pup and even included in some dog foods, but it’s preparation is different than the plant’s leaves.
