Can Dogs Eat Shark Meat? Is Shark Meat Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat shark meat? Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering if you should get a doggy bag for the shark meat steaks listed on a menu at a restaurant. If humans can eat shark meat, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely eat shark meat. While shark meat might not be technically poisonous for dogs, large fish such as sharks are usually high in mercury, which can lead to mercury toxicity in your dog.

Many sharks are also considered to be endangered species, so with the array of other safer fish available like herring, sardines, and whitefish, it’s best to skip feeding shark meat to your dog.

As always, you must ask your veterinarian before sharing any human foods with your dog. Here’s what you need to know about shark meat and dogs.

Why Is Shark Meat Bad For Dogs?

Shark meat is not technically toxic to dogs. But fish as large as sharks tend to accumulate high levels of mercury in their bodies. This is due to both their long lifespan and their place towards the top of the food chain.

If your dog eats shark meat and develops mercury toxicity, it can result in a range of medical conditions including endocrine issues and nervous system problems.

Fish are generally a great source of protein for your dog and also provide a lot of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids, but it’s safest to stick to smaller fish like herring, sardines, and whitefish if you’re looking to add fish to your dog’s regular diet.

Additionally, sharks are often considered to be endangered species.

A small amount of shark meat is not very likely to cause your dog any lasting damage or ongoing problems. So if you spot your dog sneaking in a bite of shark meat, simply remove the rest of the meat and pay attention to your dog.

Look for any immediate symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea or stomach pain. If you notice such symptoms, it’s safest to call your veterinarian and follow their advice.

If you discover that your dog has consumed a much larger amount of shark meat, it’s also best to consult with your veterinarian and follow their exact advice. They will suggest any medical help or tests that might need to be carried out to ensure your dog’s safety.
