Can Dogs Eat Hummus? Is Hummus Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat hummus? You may be asking this because you love to snack on this dip with veggies and pita, and you want to share with your furry friend. Humans can eat hummus, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is no, hummus isn’t safe for dogs to eat. Hummus is primarily made from chickpeas, which are safe for dogs to eat in moderation, but it contains other ingredients that aren’t good for your dog, like oils and seasonings.

If your pup has eaten hummus, you should contact your veterinarian for guidance. Here’s why hummus is bad for dogs.

Why Is Hummus Bad For Dogs?

Hummus contains seasonings like garlic and onion powder, both of which are not good for your dog. It also contains oils that your pup should stay away from.

While hummus is not good for dog, feeding plain, fresh chickpeas to your pup is not harmful and actually has some health benefits. While you’re here, check out one of our dog treat recipes that includes chickpeas.

If you want your dog to reap the benefits of hummus safely, plain chickpeas are the way to go.

If you’re feeling bad about not sharing your hummus with you doggo, you might be able to feed them some common hummus dipping option. Cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, and other veggies are perfectly safe and health for your dog.

Just because your pupper can’t eat part of your snack doesn’t mean they need to feel left out.

If your dog ate hummus, you should keep an eye on them for any strange behavior. They most likely will not experience anything beyond some stomach upset, but that depends on the weight of your dog and how much hummus they ate.

If you know your pup ate an entire tub of the dip, you should contact your vet as a precaution. Additionally, if your dog is acting more lethargic than normal or exhibiting signs of stomach upset for longer than a couple of hours, a call to the vet is warranted.
