Katherine Heigl is known for being an animal lover. The Grey’s Anatomy star is a veganism advocate, and started Heigl’s Hounds of Hope with her mother. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals even gave her the Presidential Service Award for her work around animal welfare.

She’s had a lot of pet dogs too, growing up with them and adopting more with her husband, singer Josh Kelley – a true dog mom. And now, she’s launched her own pet nutrition brand

New Dog Food in Town

Heigl named Badlands Ranch after Heigl’s Utah ranch, and the company offers gently cooked dog food. Her ranch inspired her to create the food range. It provides medical care, obedience training, and adoption placements across the US.

Not only that, but it works in partnership with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation. This is another organization that the actress and her family founded, and it rescues pups from high-kill shelters,

Heigl created Badlands Ranch to “deliver delicious products that nourish dogs inside and out for overall health while placing animal welfare as our top priority,” she said upon launching the brand.

The flagship product the brand offers is Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete. It’s dog food with a range of superfoods, as well as beef, salmon, and vegetables. Then, there are also Superfood Bites, which contain freeze-dried raw beef liver and contain no fillers, preservatives, or artificial ingredients.

Heigl described the new range as serving a “bigger purpose”, because “when your dog eats Superfood Complete, you’re not just helping them achieve a healthier life, you’re helping another dog in need get nutritious food, too”.

Serving up Superfoods

Plenty of superfoods that are good for humans are great for dogs, too. Dogs can eat okra, whether raw or cooked, as well as flaxseed, goji berries, and honey. However, you may want to consult with your veterinarian before introducing a new food into your pup’s diet – and remember that some superfoods, like acai berry, are unsafe for dogs.
