People are calling it ‘Airbnb for dogs’. A new app lets users rent out their backyard or private lot to dog parents wanting a private space for their pup.

AirBn… The Backyard?

Sniffspot was launched in 2018 by David Adams. According to Adams, the idea grew from a need to find safe, isolated spaces for his dog, Soba. Unfortunately for Adams, he lived 45 minutes from the nearest dog park. Both he and his wife wished for an app that would allow their dog to run freely without stressing her out. Luckily, Adams had a background in startups and short-term rentals.

According to their website, “Cities are not built for dogs. It’s tough to be a dog in the city…The world is not dog friendly, but Sniffspot is working to make it a more dog-friendly place one spot at a time.”

Since launching, the app has gained huge popularity, spreading from the Pacific Northwest across the country. Using the app, anyone can rent out their private green spaces to dogs to run, play, and relax in. Aside from backyards, rural landowners are renting fields and other large green spaces for dogs to roam freely and without care.

Benefits for Anxious Dogs

Not surprisingly, the app has become especially useful for dog parents with anxious or reactive dogs. Understandably, these parents feel hesitant to take their pups into public spaces with other, unknown dogs. Sniffspot positions itself as an accessible alternative to public dog parks. And for travelers or those in large cities, having options is a huge plus.

And for people wondering how profitable the app is; it seems Sniffspot is an easy way to bring in a decent bit of money. For a backyard, the average price is anywhere from $9 to $15 an hour. Some luxury spots can charge up to $25 for spaces that include slides, water features, toys, and more.
