While it has since dissipated, Hurricane Ian caused a lot of damage to Cuba, Florida, and South Carolina in particular over the last week – it was the deadliest hurricane to hit Florida in over 85 years.

As well as human fatalities, pets and wildlife have also suffered, but organizations like the Pennsylvania SPCA have done what they can to help animals affected by the extreme weather.

Helping Out Animals in Need

In conjunction with the Greater Good Charities, a nonprofit that looks out for people, pets, and the planet, the Pennsylvania SPCA took in animals affected by Hurricane Ian, reported abc27. Both dogs and cats arrived at their headquarters on Sunday, Oct. 2, with six dogs and five cats welcomed.

The dogs are currently in quarantine, and will remain there for another week and a half. They won’t be in contact with any of the other shelter animals to help keep everybody safe. Afterward, staff will evaluate the dogs and cats and then make them available for adoption.

The shelter took to Instagram to share videos of some of the new arrivals

“The Pennsylvania SPCA has always been dedicated to helping animals in need,” said CEO Julie Kim. “When we have the opportunity and ability to make an impact on animals like these who have fallen victim to a natural disaster, we step up.”

Up for Adoption After Hurricane Ian

The shelter is full of other animals available for adoption, too. The PSPCA is open to visitors who might be looking for a new furry friend. And if the comments on their Instagram post are anything to go by, it looks as if the newest animals on the block will have no shortage of suitors.

Next month, on Nov. 5, the PSPCA is hosting its 10th annual Bark & Whine Gala. It’s the first in-person gala since 2019, and will feature some of the canines and felines available for adoption.
