Denver Animal Shelter Encourages Adoption of Big Dogs

Denver Animal Shelter (DAS) is urging people to adopt big dogs. The organization has a ton of large pups and is running out of space in its facility to house canines — of both small and big dog breeds.

Shelter seeks forever homes for big dogs

Like many shelters right now, DAS is at capacity. To help free up space and help more dogs, it recently offered a special on large dog adoptions. Any dog 30 pounds and up was available for adoption for a mere $30. This was a deep discount from the shelter’s usual adoption fees of $100 to $170. (Prices vary based on the age of the dog.)

DAS further sweetened the pot by pointing out that “big dogs give big love, are a crime deterrent, are protectors, are great exercise partners, and make you look small,” according to 9 News.

Adoptions at DAS include vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, microchipping, and a pet license valid for one year.

While DAS also has small dogs available for adoption, people are more likely to adopt little pups. Potential pet parents often overlook large breeds.

“We are concerned since our animal numbers continue to grow and we know it will only get worse,” Denver Animal Protection Director Melanie Sobel told 9 News. “The Fourth of July is our busiest day, and the following week is our busiest week of the year for strays coming into the shelter. We want to make room for all the animals that will need help.”

In addition to their current coverage, 9 News has previously reported on the spike in animals being surrendered this year. It seems this is a troubling, but growing, trend in the Denver area.

Advantages of large breeds

When it comes to choosing a furry companion, large breeds often come with a range of advantages that make them an excellent choice for many individuals and families. One of the most notable advantages is their impressive presence and ability to provide a sense of security. Large canines are imposing in size and often have loud barks. These two factors serve as a deterrent to potential intruders and make you feel safer at home. Additionally, their size can also make them great playmates for children, as they have the strength and endurance to keep up with active youngsters, ensuring endless hours of fun and companionship.

Another advantage of big dogs is their loyalty. Many large breeds naturally form strong bonds with their human companions. This loyalty creates a deep and meaningful connection. Also, big dogs exhibit unwavering devotion. Whether you’re going on a hike, taking a stroll in the park, or simply relaxing at home, having a big dog by your side can provide an extra layer of companionship and security, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a devoted and protective four-legged friend.
