Doggy daycare can be a godsend to some dogs and their owners. It provides socialization, physical exercise, and mental stimulation. But it isn’t for every dog, and it definitely wasn’t one Boxer‘s cup of tea. How do we know? Because the escape artist dog scaled a very tall pen in an attempt to break out of doggy day care. A video of the feat has since gone viral on TikTok.

TikTok user @joanna_hammel19 posted the hilarious video on the social media platform. Since then, it has garnered more than 6.3 million views and 538,000 likes.

In the clip, the Boxer climbs a very tall mesh gate and manages to maneuver their body over the top. Then they jump to floor, triumphant.

“Caught the escape artist on camera,” Hammel captioned the video.

If the comments are any indication, this kind of behavior is to be expected of Boxers.

“of course it is a boxer,” Jennifer Green Mille commented with a laughing-crying emoji.

“That dismount though…stuck the landing!! 10/10,” Nicole Shook Thompson remarked.

“Mine jumped out a second story window once,” Clueless shared.

Boxer traits

Boxers are large, muscular, square-headed dogs who look imposing — that is, until you look into their eyes and see the mischief and joy of life reflected there. Because of their playful nature and boundless energy, they are sometimes called the “Peter Pan” of the dog breeds. Boxers aren’t considered fully mature until they are three years old, meaning they have one of the longest puppyhoods in the world of dogs.

The typical Boxer is intelligent, alert, and fearless, yet friendly. They’re loyal to their family and love to play with them, but they’re also headstrong, especially if you try to use harsh training methods with them.

Boxers are great family companions, as long as you provide them with the physical exercise and mental stimulation they need. If you’re willing and able to provide them with adequate exercise in the form of walks or runs, they can even adapt to apartment living, so long as they are able to be close to their beloved people.

How to prevent dogs from escaping

There are some tips dog owners can rely on to help prevent “escape artist” dogs from dangerous stunts like this one.

First and foremost, dogs need sufficient exercise and mental stimulation. A dog that is bored or restless is highly motivated to leave their environment, even if it is a loving home or a top-notch daycare.

Secondly, training to prevent door-dashing (or in this case, enclosure climbing) is crucial. Proper training takes time and patience, so don’t give up if your dog doesn’t as quickly as you’d like. If your dog does scale fences or enclosures, consider a fully enclosed kennel with bars on top. Remember to always leash your dog when you are outside in an unenclosed space.

Finally, dogs should always wear a collar (ideally, with a GPS tracker, so you are notified if the pup escapes) and get microchipped in case they do succeed at escape.
