Pet Owners Expected To Spend Over $60 Billion On Their Pets This Year

According to the American Pet Products Association pet owners are expected to spend over $60 billion dollars on their pets this year. $20 billion of that money was spent at Halloween on costumes.

Depending on where you look, you might get different figures but according to one survey 95% of pet owners plan on giving their pet a Christmas present this year and most of those people will spend about $36 bucks per pet. Pet owners in the UK are expected to spend $46 bucks (50 Euros) per pet. I guess this is a worldwide epidemic.

Dog owners are more likely to give their pet a gift than cat owners but over the years that gap seems to be closing.

Four out of ten pet owners confess to giving other people gifts and putting their pet’s name on the gift as the gift giver.

Other fun holiday statistics from one poll:

54% of pets will have a Christmas stocking this year

34% have a special pet-safe advent calendar (YUM)

29% will receive a Christmas card from their humans even though they can’t read

16% say their pets will be featured on their Christmas cards

3% say their pets will be “writing” letters to Santa Paws

Do you sign your pet’s names on your holiday cards and gifts? Does your dog or cat have a stocking? Is your furry family member on your holiday card?

Though I don’t buy individual gifts for my pets for Christmas, I give them lots of gifts through the year and there is always a special bag of treats for any and every holiday event, gathering or barbecue. I’m also guessing that people with one dog would be more likely to spend extravagantly than someone like me with 4 dogs.

I feel like every day is doggie Christmas in our house so I don’t feel a lot of pressure to run out and buy things just because it’s Christmas.

What special things do you do for your pets over the holidays?
