Stanley The Mentally Challenged Golden Retriever Wins The Internet’s Heart

This is a story about my mentally challenged dog named Stanley. I know this sounds strange. Please just hear me out.

Stanley is a gorgeous Golden Retriever. But Stanley isn’t like most other dogs. He was adopted by his owners five years ago from Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid Florida. Imgur user KCN1‘s post says that the first time they met their new pup, he was sleeping on top of his foster home’s dining room table. Stanley didn’t respond to his own name, but when they woke him, he was very happy, gave lots of kisses, and walked to the front door. They took that to mean he wanted to go home with them, so he did.

They found out right away that Stanley didn’t have an aggressive bone in his body. He was great with people, other animals, and kids. But unlike their other Golden Retriever, Karma, Stanley had some trouble learning commands. He also had some odd habits, like bolting out the door, gnawing at the Christmas tree, and hiding specific items around the house. He didn’t even respond to his own name when it was called.

Two professional trainers gave up on Stanley, and one suggested he was mentally challenged. So Stanley’s owners found a doggy IQ test. Stanley exhibited some interesting behavior that seemed to confirm that he is, in fact, mentally challenged. But he’s such a sweet, loving pup that his owners love him all the same. And since KCN1’s post on Imgur, more and more people have asked for pictures and stories about Stanley. He may not be the smartest dog in the world, but he’s quickly becoming one of the most loved!
