In a comical bit for this past Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jake Gyllenhaal discussed how he came to the decision to get his German Shepherd prosthetic testicles, also known as Neuticles.

Many outlets have reported on Gyllenhaal’s deep affection for dogs, having even saved a Dalmatian from oncoming traffic, back in 2019, while taking a morning walk in New York City.

He further told W Magazine, around the same time, that training his shepherd was one of his “proudest moments”.

In the interview, Gyllenhaal went on to say, “I love dogs. I just love them. They are so playful. I think they bring that out in us if we allow it. I don’t think I’m that playful, generally. I need to be reminded of it. So, they remind me of that.”

That’s good, contextual information to have when considering his decision with Neuticles.

The Veterinarian’s Recommended Course Of Action

When Gyllenhaal’s now seven-year-old German Shepherd was a puppy, he explains in the Tonight Show video clip, he had hip problems.

The puppy’s doctors recommended, as an alternative to putting a puppy through painful surgery to correct the issue, that they let the pup’s natural testosterone strengthen his hips, which would require keeping him “intact,” or unneutered.

However, with age, the shepherd developed prostate issues, and his doctors told Gyllenhaal that the dog would need undergo the neutering procedure for health reasons.

Upon suggestion from his dog’s doctor, Gyllenhaal researched neutering dogs at an older age, and the possibility of Neuticles. At first, he opposed the idea.

“I said no, of course,” he said to Fallon. “But then I was like, ‘Well, what do they look like?'”

Gyllenhal further explained, to an uncomfortable Fallon, “What I saw was what happens to a dog when they don’t have them, and it’s just an empty sac of —”

At that point, Fallon interrupted saying, “Alright, Jake, thanks.”

From there, Gyllenhaal explains that he ended up calling his doctor the night before his dog’s scheduled surgery to change his mind on getting the Neuticles for his pup.

Fallon asked how the shepherd was fairing with his Neuticles, post-surgery. Gyllenhaal gleefully responded, “He’s great. He’s fine. He’s healthy. He’s happy. He has no recollection whatsoever.”

What Exactly Are Neuticles?

As explained on the official website’s FAQ for the product, “Patented Neuticles are testicular implants for pets.”

The site explains that the company produces prosthetic testicles for any neutered pets, including canines, felines, equines, and bulls, among others.

They go on to explain that pets should have Neuticle implants once they have the neutering procedure. However, they can receive the implants “for years afterwards in most cases.”

The above-linked FAQ page covers the topic in depth, but you should perform your own research outside of a product’s website before considering such a surgery. Consult your veterinarian for advice and information.
