Salmonella Outbreak Causes Another Pet Food Recall

A Salmonella outbreak caused Stormberg Foods to recall products this week.

The news follows a similar outbreak that occurred just a couple of weeks ago. In late June, Freshpet recalled their home-cooked chicken recipe for Salmonella contamination. Earlier this year, Dog Gone Dog Treats recalled their products in Massachusetts for Salmonella contamination, as well.

The good news is that dogs are not prone to sickness from Salmonella bacteria, but pet parents should know what to do if their pups do get sick.

Read on for more details of the outbreak and what to do if your dog has Salmonella poisoning.

Details of the Outbreak

In a press release made by the Food and Drug Administration. Stormberg Foods announced its recall of three products due to samples testing positive for Salmonella. The three products are: Beg & Barker Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, Billo’s Best Friend Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, and Green Coast Pets Chicken Crisps Dog Treats.

If you have any of these products in your home, dispose of them. Don’t handle the treats themselves, as humans can contract Salmonella much easier than dogs. If your dog ate any of these treats and is not displaying symptoms of poisoning, keep an eye on them to be safe.

If your dog is displaying symptoms, contact your vet for guidance.

Symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning in Dogs

If your pup ate these treats and is acting strangely or displaying signs of illness, they may have contracted Salmonella poisoning.

Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning, otherwise known as salmonellosis, include, but are not limited to:

  • Diarrhea, sometimes with mucus in the stool
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite or anorexia
  • Dehydration

If you suspect your dog has Salmonella poisoning, contact your vet right away. Most dogs are able to fight off this bacteria without issue. Some may have lingering diarrhea that goes away with time.
