Intestinal Tumor in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments

Intestinal tumor in dogs happens when a tumor forms in the intestinal tract or stomach. Thankfully, the tumor is usually benign.

Generally, older and middle-aged dogs develop the condition the most.

Technically, the condition is also known as leiomyoma in dogs.

If you see the signs of the condition in your dog, then get to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Symptoms of Intestinal Tumor in Dogs

The condition produces a range of symptoms. For example, some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Acting lethargic
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • Flatulence
  • Constipation
  • Poop with blood in it
  • Stomach pain

Causes of Intestinal Tumor in Dogs

The cause of the condition is unfortunately unknown. However, environmental and hereditary factors are suspected to be involved.

Generally, dogs aged six and older develop the condition more than younger pups.

Treatments for Intestinal Tumor in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about your dog’s full medical history.

Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Also, blood and urine tests will be taken.

Additionally, X-rays and ultrasounds can confirm the tumor. Also, an MRI or CT scan can be used. Finally, a biopsy of the tumor can be taken.

Generally, treatment removes the tumor. This will be carried out in hospital. Your dog will need to stay in hospital for a few days to recover.

Additionally, while recovering at home, your dog’s exercise will need to be reduced. Also, pain medication is often prescribed.

As always, if your vet prescribes your dog any medicine, make sure to stick to the correct dose and frequency instructions. Also, complete the full course of medicine.
