Since then, the Milwaukee-based pet food manufacturer is reported to have taken significant precautionary measures in their pet food safety processes to minimize potential issues.
Why did Stella & Chewy recall its dog food?
Stella & Chewy issued a recall after a routine test revealed the presence of Listeria Monocytogenes in the products.
Listeria is a type of bacteria that contaminates food and leads to a serious foodborne illness known as Listeriosis.
According to the FDA, dogs who develop Listeriosis exhibit symptoms such as mild gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, breathing problems, and muscle pain. A serious level of infection can lead to death.
Shockingly, not all dogs infected with Listeria show symptoms. Instead, some dogs simply become carriers of Listeria. In this case, a pup may seem healthy despite carrying the bacteria. However, they will shed the bacteria through their stool, increasing the risks of the bacteria spreading to people.
In humans, Listeriosis leads to symptoms such as fever, persistent headache, nausea, and diarrhea. Unfortunately, vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems can succumb to Listeriosis.
