Can Dogs Drink Soy Milk? Is Soy Milk Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat soy milk? Non-dairy milk alternatives are now household staples in the United States. For humans, they’re easier to digest and highly nutritious. But is soy milk safe for dogs to drink, as well?

The short answer is yes, soy milk is safe for dogs if they do not have a soy allergy. Soy is a major allergen for both humans and canines.

When introducing your dog to any soy product, you must go through proper testing and consultation with your veterinarian first. In the meantime, here’s everything you should know about how soy milk can be a safe and nutritious addition to your dog’s diet.

How Is Soy Milk Good For Dogs?

It may seem like soy milk is a relatively recent addition to our diets, but in China, it dates back to 222-20 AD. In China, drawings of soy, soy milk, and tofu are found carved into stone walls.

Early humans have recognized the benefits of soy for a very long time. It’s very likely that dogs, too, have enjoyed soy throughout history.

Today, soy is found in many high-quality dog foods and treats. In general, soy is an excellent source of plant-based protein, which can supplement a dog’s carnivorous diet.

Soy is completely non-toxic for dogs who do not have a soy allergy, and soybeans are loaded with protein — so much so that it can feasibly replace a portion of your dog’s meat intake without unbalancing their overall diet.

Furthermore, soy is a superb source of essential and beneficial amino acids.

Whether your dog will enjoy the taste of soy milk, though, is another story. For the most part, dogs do seem to enjoy its creamy texture and will even give you those puppy dog eyes for more.

As touched on above, there are a few drawbacks to soy milk.

For one, your dog could be allergic to it. Soy is a common allergen amongst dogs. Before committing soy milk to your dog’s diet, you’ll want to first have a discussion with your veterinarian.

If your vet gives you the all-clear to test out soy with your dog, start slowly. Give them a small taste and then keep an eye on them for a few hours to see if any allergic reactions occur.

Also, if you’re considering adding soy-based treats or food that contains soy, make sure that it is an organic or non-GMO product. Soy is cheap when it isn’t properly processed and is often thrown in as filler for cheaper dog foods.

These mass-produced forms of soy often come from unregulated fields, which are treated heavily with pesticides.

While you may not notice the effects of something like this right away, over time a toxic buildup of these harmful chemicals can lead to cancer and other chronic diseases.

Do some research with your vet, and take care with what you put in your dog’s body, as well as your own.
