Can dogs eat pretzels? Maybe you’ve wondered if you could share a bite with your dog while snacking on a pretzel as you watch a game on the couch. If humans can eat pretzels, can dogs safely eat them too?
There is no short yes or no answer to whether dogs can eat pretzels safely. Technically, there isn’t anything in most pretzels that will be necessarily toxic to dogs, but almost all pretzels contain such a large amount of salt that it brings about the very real risk of salt poisoning if a dog eats too much.
So this is one snack that you should probably keep to yourself, beyond perhaps allowing your dog the occasional tiny bite of a pretzel.
As always, you must consult your veterinarian before sharing any human food with your dog. Here’s what you need to know about pretzels and dogs.
When Are Pretzels Okay For Dogs To Eat?
If you can manage to track down a plain pretzel that hasn’t had any salt added to it, then it could work as an okay occasional snack for your dog. Although, you’ll want to only feed your pooch pretzels in moderation as they can be high in calories and carbohydrates.
Additionally, only ever serve a pretzel on its own to your dog; never include any mustards or other dipping sauces that the pretzel might come with.
When Are Pretzels Bad For Dogs?
While the base ingredients of a pretzel probably won’t harm a dog, most pretzels contain so much salt that they can pose a real risk to your pooch.
In general, dogs should not consume too much sodium. Eating too many salty foods can lead to issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Too much sodium can also pose the risk of your dog suffering from salt poisoning, which can bring on symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and drinking way more water than usual. In severe cases, a dog may experience seizures. In extreme cases, the condition can become fatal.
So if you notice that your dog has sneaked in a bite of your pretzel, they will probably be okay. Just be sure to keep an eye out for any adverse reactions or symptoms. But in general, maybe keep your pretzels away from your pooch.
