Can Dogs Eat Candy Corn? Is Candy Corn Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat candy corn? You may be asking this because your pup got into some Halloween candy and ate a bag of these tiny sugar treats. Humans can eat candy corn, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is no, candy corn is not good for dogs to eat. While it may be tempting to throw your pup one of these orange snacks, candy corn contains far too much sugar for your dog’s sensitive digestive system.

If your dog has eaten candy corn, you should contact your veterinarian for guidance. Here’s why candy corn is bad for dogs.

Why Is Candy Corn Bad For Dogs?

Candy corn, one of the most popular candies to be doled out on Halloween, is solely made from ingredients your dog shouldn’t have.

Although some candy corn varies with other ingredients, like honey and milk powder, the two staple ingredients in these triangular sweets are sugar and corn syrup.

Additionally, one very popular brand of candy corn contains trace amounts of cocoa powder, which is toxic for dogs.

Candy corn made its way into the news for containing lac-resin, or a bug’s secretion. The jury is still out on what kind of reaction lac-resin can cause dogs to have if ingested, but it’s best to not try to find out.

Additionally, some candy corns contain xylitol, a natural sweetener substitute that is toxic for dogs, even in small amounts. Overall, this sweet should be kept away from your pup.

If your dog ate candy corn, you should keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t have any serious negative reactions. They might not have a reaction at all, but that depends on the amount your pup ate and whether they have any digestive or sugar processing issues.

If your dog ate candy corn, and they have an underlying issue like diabetes, you should take them to the vet to be assessed.

If your dog doesn’t have any underlying health issues, they may still show signs of stomach upset like vomiting or diarrhea. These aren’t necessarily signs of poisoning, but they may need to forego a meal or two until their digestive system can settle again.
