As was the case last year, a small dog retained his title as the most-viewed canine in the DogTime Breed Center in 2014. But while a small dog took the top spot, larger dogs also got a lot of attention — especially the Pit Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, and Siberian Husky.
This is not a list of DogTime’s favorite canines, nor are we promoting specific purebreds or hybrids; it is a ranking of the dogs DogTime readers looked at most often on DogTime.com in 2014.
Here they are:
10. Goldendoodle
The Poodle-Golden Retriever hybrid is notable for his low- to no-shed coat that makes him ideal for humans who have dander allergies. (2013 rank: 12)
9. Beagle
The inspiration for Snoopy, this loyal pooch is always putting his 220 million scent receptors to good use. (2013 rank: 22)
8. American Pit Bull Terrier
An excellent family dog for those who are willing to invest the time to train and socialize him, the Pit Bull is intelligent, loving, and loyal. (2013 rank: 13)
7. German Shepherd
One of the world’s most recognized dogs, the German Shepherd is a versitile working canine who excels as almost everything: guiding the handicapped, assisting police and soldiers, herding, search-and-rescue, and more. (2013 rank: 27)
6. Siberian Husky
A medium-sized working dog who has a reputation for being an escape artist from fenced backyards (if the fence isn’t sunk into the ground). (2013 rank: 21)
5. Boxer
A large dog whose imposing muscular body belies a playful nature with antics that include the “kidney dance” and making a “woo-woo” sound when he’s excited. (2013 rank: 7)
4. Maltipoo
A combination of two companion dogs — a Maltese and Poodle — in one small, lovable package, the Maltipoo is also an excellent choice for timid or first-time dog owners. (2013 rank: 2)
3. Shih Tzu
Loosely translated, the moniker for this dog from China means “little lion,” but there’s nothing fierce about this small, loyal companion who makes a superb house dog. (2013 rank: 4)
2. Labrador Retriever
Called “America’s most-popular breed,” this large dog works as a show competitor, assistance dog to the handicapped, retriever for hunters, search and rescue dog, and excels as a loving family dog. (2013 rank: 3)
1. Cockapoo
The first “designer dog,” the Cockapoo is a hybrid of the Cocker Spaniel and Poodle and is so people-oriented he gets along with practically everyone. (2013 rank: 1)
