This week, Petco announced its new Clean Grooming Initiative, becoming the first national pet retailer to offer designated Clean* products.

In their official press release, the national pet store company said that pet owners will now be able to find these products and grooming services in 1,350 stores across the United States. Significantly, Clean* products are those that don’t use parabens, phthalates, and artificial dyes.

Customers can identify the products by their Clean* ingredients badge. Additionally, Petco’s grooming salon menu will also use the newly badged products.

This new initiative falls in line with Petco’s goal to be mindful of its customers’ wants and needs. Amazingly, this consideration even extends to Petco’s employees, who recently earned paid pet bereavement leave.

How Are the Clean Grooming Products Different?

Although FDA standards for most pet products are rigorous, there’s consistently new research showing that certain chemicals are harmful to us and our dogs. Specifically, certain dog toys containing phthalates and BPA have been found to have serious health effects. One such study found that these chemicals can disrupt dogs’ endocrine systems and lead to testicular cancer in dogs. Another study from the National Institutes of Health found that plastic and rubber chew toys are potential sources of these “endocrine disruptor” chemicals.

In a world where chemicals abound, it’s important for dog owners to know how they can keep their pets safe. Besides chew toys,  some household cleaning products can cause harm to your four-legged friend. Additionally, before letting the dog out in the yard, it’s worth seeing if the pesticides used are safe for dogs.

A Necessary Alternative for Petco Customers

“We’re thrilled to offer Clean ingredient transparency in our grooming services and products,” said Jason Heffelfinger, Petco’s Chief Services Officer. According to him, the initiative represents the next step for Petco as a leader in pet health and wellness.

Concludingly, Heffelfinger also said, “Whether at home or in one of our grooming salons, we want to make it easy for pet parents to give their pets the same high-quality options and ingredients they would choose for themselves. After all, our pets are members of the family”.

To celebrate the launch, Petco is offering customers a substantial discount on all Clean Grooming products purchased online.
