Losing a dog is a dog owner’s worst nightmare. There are many things you can do to prevent a pet from going missing, but sometimes completely unpredictable circumstances arise. One Ohio dog owner thought the worst when her precious pooch disappeared after a traffic accident. After six months, she assumed she’d never see her dog, Tank, ever again. But after grieving the loss of her companion, a miracle happened: the woman found her dog.

Woman and dog reunited after tragedy

The dog owner (who is remaining anonymous) got into an accident with her 10-month-old puppy present in the vehicle. The dog owner sustained injuries and went to the hospital. During the commotion, her puppy Tank escaped from the vehicle. Someone found him wandering the area shortly after the accident. However, shelter workers weren’t able to find Tank’s owner. Not knowing that someone was still searching for him, they named him Wilson and put him up for adoption. After recovering from the accident, Tank’s owner made a surprising discovery. While browsing the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s Facebook page, she recognized her own dog!

The shelter released a video of Tank and his owner reuniting. It’s clear by Tank’s rapidly wiggling tail that he remembers his owner and is happy to return home. While it’s tragic that Tank and his owner were separated, thankfully this story has a happy ending for both the dog and his owner.

Preventing missing pets

Some circumstances that allow a pet to go missing are unavoidable. But there are steps you can take to increase your chances of recovering your dog if they ever go missing. Microchipping dogs can help give them an avenue to return home if they lose their collar with identification. Additionally, some tags for dog collars now have GPS trackers that allow you to easily locate your runaway pet. Keep a current photo of your dog in the event that they do escape. And be sure to check your local shelters and rescues after their disappearance. Dogs can travel surprising distances after running away. Some dogs show up several states away from home!
