Two dozen dogs abandoned in a pair of Indiana county parks are in the care of Rushville Animal Shelter today. A local police department seeks answers about what happened.
24 dogs abandoned in parks
Police are investigating who abandoned the 24 dogs. The person (or people) responsible left nine dogs in a city park in Rushville sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Someone also abandoned 15 additional dogs in nearby Decatur County. They are now in the care of Rushville Animal Shelter, approximately 45 miles outside of Indianapolis.
According to USA Today, a shelter staff member said the ages and breeds of the pups are unknown. “Most are estimated around 1 year old,” the spokesperson said. “We suspect most of them to be collie or shepherd mixes but that is just an educated guess at this point.”
Also, it is unknown how soon the canines might be available for adoption.
“We do not currently have an estimated date they will be available as most are scared and will require some socialization,” the staff member said. “We encourage everyone to watch our Facebook as well will update the post as things change.”
Shelter calls for tips from the public
In a Facebook post about the incident, the shelter posted pictures of the abandoned dogs. They looked terrified and neglected.
In the post’s caption, the shelter pleaded for the public’s help in figuring out what happened.
“Whoever dumped these pups proceeded to dump an additional 15 dogs in a neighboring county, they cared enough to put them in locations that kept them contained but this is still not acceptable!” the post reads.
It continued: “24 dogs is ALOT of dogs to leave one location overnight and go unnoticed, if you know something, say something lives are depending on it!”
The shelter asks that people nearby check their security camera footage for clues. Anyone with information should reach out to the Rushville Police Department. Anonymous tips are welcome.
