Indiana’s First Dog, Henry, passed away at the age of 13, as IndyStar reports. Henry Holcomb, the Miniature Schnauzer, belonging to Gov. Eric Holcomb and Janet Holcomb, was known across Indiana.
Holcomb posted on X (Twitter) about Henry’s passing on Monday night, Dec. 18, leading to an overflow of sorrow and solidarity.
Holcomb wrote, “Henry brought so much joy to Hoosiers young and old, two-legged and four-legged alike. Continuing, he said, “He was more than a family pet to me and Janet as he gifted us daily with his funny, loving ways that we’ll treasure forever.”
Indiana’s First Dog leaves a heartfelt legacy
As per IndyStar, Henry accepted the badge as the official “First Dog” a few months after Holcomb assumed office as governor. From his early days on Twitter, he engaged in viral challenges, aided a couple’s engagement, served as ringbearer at their wedding, and even participated in their gender reveal. He actively participated in parades and fundraisers and earned countless pats and treats.
“Henry’s exuberance for life will be missed, and his place in our hearts never replaced,” Holcomb stated.
Early on Monday morning, in an interview shortly before the news of Henry’s passing, Holcomb mentioned that the dog had been feeling unwell.
Holcomb further said, “But if I had to say what I’m most proud of. Henry would be on top of the list.”
Henry enjoyed celebrity status and maintained several social media accounts, including on X, Facebook, and Instagram as @FirstDogHenry.
First Lady shared a post in memory of Henry
Apart from Gov. Holcomb, First Lady Janet Holcomb also shared a personal message about the passing of her beloved furry companion, as per WTWO/WAWV.
She wrote in her post, “Today we said goodbye to our best friend, First Dog Henry. We are profoundly saddened by this loss, but memories of sharing our very special boy with his thousands of fans and followers will forever bring smiles to our faces and joy to our hearts.”
Janet described how Henry adapted to government functions pretty well. During official dinners, he used to stay under the table patiently. Additionally, his expressive face never failed to charm the people of Indiana.
She also revealed that Henry had faced several medical challenges in the last few years.
In her words, “Henry was tough beyond measure, surviving a terrible dog attack, surgeries, and prolonged illness, including thrombocytopenia (a life-threatening auto-immune disorder); and bladder stones which would cause abdominal sepsis.” She further said, “No matter how sick he was, he refused to give up until age and compounding health challenges became too much.”
Finally, she ended her post by expressing gratitude for the privilege of being Henry’s “humans” alongside Eric.
