People reports that rescuers saved a dog in Michigan from a 60-foot cliff fall. The 3-year-old Dancer was walking with her family at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore when she went off-leash.
Owners assumed the dog was dead
After Dancer disappeared, her pet parents looked for her for several hours, and feared she was dead. Later, someone called in Pictured Rocks Park Rangers. With the help of Superior High Angle Rescue Professionals (SHARP), a local rope rescue team, they set out to find the canine.
The next morning, three members from SHARP found the dog alive in “the treacherous section of Lake Superior shoreline.” The pup managed to survive the whole night but was excited when she saw her rescuers. Dancer was cold, but she did not sustain any injuries. Her owners ultimately reunited with her.
“With this year’s mild start to winter, many areas of Pictured Rocks are more accessible than they are most years,” Chief Ranger Joe Hughes said. “It is still important to remember to be prepared for slippery, cold conditions that can change quickly.”
Another dog fell from a cliff
In another similar incident, a Golden Retriever recently fell from a cliff in Oregon. 3-year-old Leo was walking with his owners at the Ecola State Park on the Oregon Coast when he started running and fell about 300 feet from the cliff onto a beach.
Subsequently, the Coast Guard aircrew arrived at the scene and ultimately, the rescuers managed to save the pup. Leo received immediate attention from an emergency vet after sustaining injuries and being diagnosed with pneumothorax. The vet later discharged the dog, and Leo has been recovering well since then.
“Although the coast is beautiful, it is not perfectly safe,” the local fire department said. We’d like to remind everyone to keep their dogs on leash when hiking unless otherwise stated ‘Dogs Allowed Off Leash’ on the state park website.”
The two separate incidents highlight the importance of keeping your dog on a leash while taking them out for a walk.
