A 33-year-old man in Northwest Chicago shot a dog to death who approached him on the street. The dog was in the company of their disabled owner when the horrifying incident occurred. It’s reported that the animal broke away from their leash and ran toward the unidentified man, only for him to pull out his gun.

According to CBS News Chicago, the shooting happened on Feb. 19 in the Albany Park neighborhood. On that fateful day, the dog — whose breed hasn’t been disclosed to the public yet — was walking with their 41-year-old owner, who is in a wheelchair.

The two were headed north on Pulaski Road around 6:50 p.m. on Monday when the canine suddenly broke free from their owner’s leash and approached a man on the sidewalk. It was then that the man retrieved his gun and fired at the animal. Reportedly, the dog had a muzzle on at the time of the shooting.

Alisa Bondarenova, who witnessed the killing of the dog, told the news outlet, “And I saw this guy, like, pull out the gun, and he just shot the dog. So I just stayed in the car for, you know, a couple of minutes — like shocked.”

Bondarenova further explained how the suspect was unexpectedly calm after the incident and did not try to run away. She said, “And then he was still — he didn’t run away. He was still walking around here, this guy, with a phone. And yeah, it was horrible.”

It remains unclear why exactly the man fired at the pup as the chances of the canine attacking the man weren’t very high because of the muzzle.

Police didn’t charge the suspect. Authorities added that the man in question is a valid Concealed Carry License and Firearm Owner’s identification card holder.
