5 Tips For Storing Your Dog Food

We buy our dogs the best food, and we want to make sure it is stored properly so that it stays fresh and appetizing for our pups. Here are some tips to keep your dog fresh from the moment you open the bag to the last scoop.

1. Start With A Quality Dog Food

Be sure you are feeding your pup a quality dog food that caters to the needs of your specific breed of dog. The nutritional needs of a Toy Poodle are going to be different than those of a Saint Bernard, so be sure you are feeding your dog a food that caters to their unique nutritional needs.

2. Make Sure Your Dog Food Is Fresh To Begin With

Always check the expiration date on dog food before you buy it. Try to get a bag with an expiration date as far off in the future as possible.

Examine the dog food package for tears, rips or anything that could compromise the freshness of the dog food. Sometimes the bag can get torn in shipping or when putting it out in the pet store, so be sure to examine the bag for damage before purchasing.

3. Quality Control

When you get home you’ll want to open the bag, smell the food, and examine it with your eyes. If you open the bag and it smells different from how it usually smells, or you see abnormal coloring, be sure to take it back to the store you purchased it from immediately.

4. Environment

How you store the food once you get it home can make a big difference in how long it remains fresh and holds on to its maximum nutritional value. Be sure to store your dog food in a cool, dry place, and make sure it’s elevated off of the floor.

5. It’s All In The Bag

The best way to store your dog food is in the bag it comes in. Simply fold or roll the top of the bag down and clip it into place between feeding.

Quality dog food such as Royal Canin is specially packaged to maintain freshness. If you want to store your pet’s food in a storage bin or special food container, place the entire bag in the container instead of dumping the food out of its original packaging to ensure maximum freshness.
