5 Therapy Dogs Start New Roles at Istanbul Airport

The newest additions to Istanbul Airport’s team include five therapy dogs. These canines are dedicated to offering comfort and alleviating stress for travelers in one of the world’s busiest transportation hubs. As such, these furry companions roam the airport premises while providing cuddles, belly rubs, and affectionate kisses to passengers needing support.

All participants in the program are certified therapy dogs, as per AP News. They have undergone professional training and conditioning specifically geared towards providing comfort to humans

In fact, since late Feb. 2023, the “Therapy Dog Team” has been actively serving after months of meticulous preparation. Their training regimen focused on desensitization to various distracting stimuli. This taught them to remain focused and effective in their role amidst bustling crowds.

Kadir Demirtas, Istanbul Airport’s customer experience manager, stated, “We have to ensure that they are safe and they are 100% adapted to all environments.”

One of the therapy dogs is Kuki, who assumes the role of team captain. He is a Lagotto Romagnolo, an Italian Retriever breed. He is a people pleaser, yet he occasionally takes breaks and indulges in moments of playfulness. Perhaps a bit less studious than some other canines, he even sometimes skips out on duty.

However, it’s nothing to worry about. As per the team’s veterinarian, each dog’s daily hours depend on their disposition on that particular day.

What’s more, the dogs are considered official airport staff with badges and uniforms. They adhere to a fixed schedule and operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the busiest hours at the airport.

Kuki’s teammate is Alita, a Border Collie. She captivates with her intense gaze and unwavering dedication to her handler. As a matter of fact, her remarkable ability to comfort and calm nerves is truly striking.

Alita’s handler, Volkan Gul, remarked, “We are always surrounded by people who are constantly petting her.” It’s clear she makes a fantastic emotional support animal for weary travelers and nervous ones alike.
